Conservation of Indigenous Seeds

Conservation of Indigenous Seeds

NIRMAN  has  taken  initiatives  to  conserve  indigenous seeds   and   the associated   knowledge   system   involving farming  communities  through  regular trainings  and orientations     to     conserve     and     undertake     seed treatment.  As  a  result,  farmers  have conserved  38 indigenous    varieties    of    rice,    besides    indigenous varieties   of   brinjal,   chilly,   ridge gourd   and   several other  vegetables.  In  its  field  area in  the  Kandhamal district, NIRMAN has conserved 31 varieties of millets and   pulses.   We   work   with   the local   communities   to enhance  their  control  over local  genetic  resources (seeds, medicinal plants, and livestock) so as to uphold their rights to use them and benefit from bio-diversity.

Our Vision is promoting equitable

Nirman focuses on restoring the ecosystems with rich biodiversity and has specific intervention in agriculture, natural resource management and governance. The organization is concerned with issues relating to the negative impact of climatic variations and current development paradigm that has endangered the natural resources and traditional knowledge base. Thus, it yearns to have sovereignty over the seed, the soil, the land, water, the indigenous knowledge system and strives to achieve sustainable use of natural resources and democratize its governance pattern.
